The 75-4DL is the most sociable motorhome in the Ascent range, and the logic behind it is unusual enough to be worth explaining properly.
Almost every motorhome layout asks you to choose. Fixed bed or living space. Lounge or bedroom. Space by day or convenience by night. The 75-4DL refuses the choice: it has two full lounges, two electrically operated drop-down double beds, and not a single square foot permanently committed to sleeping.
At the front, a flexi-lounge with convertible travel seats and an electric pedestal table, the daytime hub, where you eat, plan and sit with the cab seats swivelled round.
At the rear, a full U-shaped lounge with domestic-style sofa seating and storage beneath. This is the room people don’t expect. It’s somewhere to retreat to, somewhere for the kids or grandchildren to sit with a film while the adults eat, somewhere to sit in the evening with the rear doors open and the view out the back.
Between the two runs a wide central walkway past the kitchen and washroom. That corridor is why the vehicle feels so open, you can see from the cab to the rear window, and the whole interior reads as one space rather than a series of compartments.
Above each lounge sits an electrically operated drop-down double bed. Both descend at the touch of a button and both retract in the morning.
Four people sleep in proper double beds. Nobody is relegated to a converted dinette with a join down the middle. Nobody spends twenty minutes rebuilding furniture before bed and another twenty in the morning. And when both beds are up, you have two complete lounges back.
For two couples travelling together, this is close to unbeatable. Each couple gets a real bed and there’s a lounge each if you want an hour apart, which anyone who has shared a motorhome for a fortnight will recognise as valuable.
The kitchen and washroom sit centrally, splitting the two living areas and keeping cooking and washing away from both.
Beneath runs the full-width garage with double-door access from either side of the vehicle, fully lined with carpeted sidewalls and durable vinyl flooring. A Truma blown-air heating outlet dries wet kit, an internal 12v strip light means you can find things after dark, and 230v and 12v power sockets let you charge e-bike batteries in situ. Up to four floor-mounted lashing rings secure heavy loads, with new bungee storage pockets for smaller items.
Built on a Ford cab and skeletal chassis with Bailey’s Alu-Tech bodyshell, the 75-4DL carries the fully specified Transit cab used across the Ascent range: a 2.0 litre 165bhp engine with 8-speed automatic gearbox, air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, automatic windscreen wipers, automatic headlights, daytime running lights and an electronic parking brake. The infotainment system runs a 12-inch touchscreen HD colour display with DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and a Ford rear-view reversing camera is fitted as standard.
Despite the space inside, the MTPLM is 3,500kg, a standard Category B licence covers it.
The Ascent interior is new from the ground up. Natural Oak furniture finishes, an Onyx worktop laminate, and a floating curved overhead locker design with an integral 12v mood lighting track that runs the length of the vehicle, which, in a layout this open, does a lot of work in the evening.
Wall coverings are fully upholstered throughout, fixtures and fittings are premium quality in matt black, and the flooring pairs Oatmeal split-section loose-fit drop-in carpets with Dark Oak durable vinyl beneath. Dune soft furnishings come as standard with two scatter cushions.
A 150Ah lithium battery gives meaningfully better off-grid performance than lead-acid, and the Truma Combi Neo 6E delivers fast, efficient room heating with exceptional hot water performance.
Two couples touring together. Families who want somewhere separate for the children to sit. Couples who entertain on site, or who simply want a rear lounge to spend evenings in. And anyone who has concluded that a fixed bed is a lot of vehicle to give up for eight hours a night.
