If you’ve spent any time looking at Bailey motorhomes, you’ll have come across the 69-4. It has been the best-selling layout in the Adamo line-up, and it transfers into the Ascent range with the new styling, new interior and upgraded specification applied over the top of a design that already worked.
The reason it sells is what it doesn’t have: a fixed bed. Nothing in the 69-4 is permanently committed to sleeping, which is why a 6.9 metre motorhome feels considerably larger inside than the tape measure suggests.
The living area sits up front and works hard. Twin convertible travel seats fold and reconfigure between forward-facing belted seating for travel and comfortable lounge seating on site, and the swivelling cab seats bring two more places into the arrangement once you’re parked. An electric rise-and-fall pedestal table adjusts at the press of a button, up for eating, down to coffee-table height for an evening with the TV, or away entirely when you want the floor space.
Four designated travel seats mean everyone travels legally and comfortably. That sounds obvious until you compare it against vehicles where the extra seats are an afterthought with no legroom.
Above the front lounge sits an electrically operated drop-down double bed, a full-size bed, not a compromise berth, lowered and raised electrically. Leave the bedding made up on it and going to bed becomes a thirty-second job.
When you need the fourth and fifth places, the lounge itself converts to an additional double. It’s the arrangement that makes the 69-4 work equally well as a couple’s van with vast amounts of space and as a family van at half-term.
The kitchen occupies the centre of the vehicle, which keeps cooking heat, steam and clutter separate from where people are sitting, a small planning decision that makes a real difference across a wet week.
At the rear, the washroom is spacious and includes a separate shower cubicle. Showering over the toilet is one of the more grudgingly accepted compromises in motorhome design, and this layout avoids it.
Beneath the rear sits the full-width garage with double-door access from either side. It’s lined with carpeted sidewalls and durable vinyl flooring, heated by a Truma blown-air outlet, lit by an internal 12v strip light, and fitted with 230v and 12v sockets, up to four floor-mounted lashing rings and new bungee storage pockets. Bikes, awning, folding chairs, wetsuits and the barbecue all have somewhere to live.
The Ascent uses the same fully specified Ford Transit cab as the current Adamo: 2.0 litre 165bhp engine with 8-speed automatic gearbox, air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, automatic windscreen wipers, automatic headlights, daytime running lights and an electronic parking brake. Infotainment runs through a 12-inch touchscreen HD colour display with DAB, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, with a Ford rear-view reversing camera fitted as standard.
The whole vehicle sits at 3,500kg MTPLM, drivable on a standard Category B licence.
Bailey’s brief for the Ascent was to bring the look and feel in line with its premium ranges, and the interior is where that shows. Natural Oak furniture finishes throughout, an Onyx worktop laminate, and a new floating curved overhead locker design with an integral 12v mood lighting track, so the lighting is built into the architecture rather than bolted underneath it.
Wall coverings are fully upholstered, fixtures and fittings are premium quality in matt black, and the flooring combines Oatmeal split-section loose-fit drop-in carpets over Dark Oak durable vinyl. Dune soft furnishings come as standard with two scatter cushions.
A 150Ah lithium battery improves off-grid performance substantially over lead-acid, and the Truma Combi Neo 6E provides fast, efficient room heating alongside exceptional hot water performance.
Families who need four travel seats and four berths but don’t want a fixed bed eating the floor plan. Couples who tour off-season and want the biggest possible living area for the length. Anyone moving up from a campervan who wants space without moving up a licence category.
