Fixed beds, and no argument about it

For a large number of motorhomers, fixed beds are where the conversation starts and finishes. You want to arrive on a pitch at eight in the evening after five hours of driving and go to bed without assembling anything. You want to lie down for an hour in the afternoon without disturbing the person you’re travelling with. You want to make the bed properly once, with proper bedding, and leave it made.

The 75-4T is built around that. Two fixed single beds sit at the rear, permanently made up, each with its own side of the vehicle.

The rear bedroom

Twin singles solve several problems at once. Neither of you climbs over the other in the night. Neither of you is woken by the other getting up. Different mattress preferences stop being a negotiation. And each bed has its own access to the walkway, so nobody is trapped against a wall.

Storage sits alongside the beds, and the space works as a bedroom in its own right rather than a sleeping platform at the end of a corridor.

The central washroom

This is what makes the layout, and it’s easy to under-appreciate on a floorplan. Placing the washroom centrally rather than at the rear divides the vehicle cleanly into two halves: living at the front, sleeping at the back.

The practical consequences are worth spelling out. You don’t walk through the bedroom to reach the shower. Someone can get ready in the morning without disturbing anyone still in bed. The sleeping area can be closed off entirely, which matters if one of you turns in early or if you’re travelling with another couple. And the washroom sits close to the vehicle’s centre of gravity, which is sensible engineering as well as sensible planning.

The front lounge

Up front, the lounge has twin convertible travel seats and an electric pedestal table, giving you a proper social space for eating, sitting and planning the next day. Above it sits an electrically operated drop-down double bed.

That’s the flexibility that turns a couple’s motorhome into a four-berth. The grandchildren come for a week, the family joins you for a few days, or friends visit the site, the front bed drops down electrically and everyone sleeps in a real bed. The rest of the time it’s out of sight in the roof and the lounge is entirely yours.

Kitchen and garage

The kitchen sits centrally between the living and sleeping areas, keeping cooking away from both.

Beneath the rear beds runs the full-width garage with double-door access from either side of the vehicle, a real advantage when you’ve parked with the awning out on one side and need to reach something on the other. It’s fully lined with carpeted sidewalls and durable vinyl flooring, fitted with a Truma blown-air heating outlet, an internal 12v strip light, 230v and 12v sockets, up to four floor-mounted lashing rings and new bungee storage pockets.

Base vehicle and licence

The 75-4T uses a Ford cab and skeletal chassis with an Alu-Tech bodyshell, carrying the same fully specified Transit cab as the rest of the Ascent range: 2.0 litre 165bhp engine with 8-speed automatic gearbox, air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, automatic wipers and headlights, daytime running lights, electronic parking brake, 12-inch touchscreen infotainment with DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth and USB, plus a Ford rear-view reversing camera.

At 3,500kg MTPLM it’s a Category B licence vehicle. That’s a genuine differentiator in this part of the market, where a number of comparable continental-built motorhomes need C1 entitlement.

Interior specification

Natural Oak furniture finishes, an Onyx worktop laminate, and floating curved overhead lockers with an integral 12v mood lighting track. Fully upholstered wall coverings, premium quality fixtures and fittings in matt black, Oatmeal split-section loose-fit drop-in carpets over Dark Oak durable vinyl flooring, and Dune soft furnishings supplied with two scatter cushions.

Off-grid performance comes from a new 150Ah lithium battery, and heating and hot water from the Truma Combi Neo 6E system.

Who it suits

Couples who tour for weeks rather than weekends and want a bedroom, not a bed. Anyone who has decided that making up a bed every night is no longer something they’re prepared to do. And anyone who wants that without losing the ability to sleep four when the family visits.
